I sit here and read the news about the stock markets around the world and the turmoil due to the declining value of the dollar and the economy of the United States. A three trillion dollar war to fight Arabs and Muslim for Israel to implement its racist policies, expand settlements and to set up a proxy empire in the Arab world. It is worth every penny of it and hope that voters and tax payers in the United States enjoy every minute of it. Who cares about social security, health care and the educational system? Who cares about dying Palestinian and Iraqi children? Israel First. I know that I am ecstatic.

The Cho family apologized to the people of the United States for the murder of 32 students at Virginia Tech University, so I think the right thing is for the Bush family to apologize to the people of Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan for the war crimes committed against them by its delusional son, President Bush.

It is the right thing to do. It is the ethical thing to do. It is the legal thing to. It is time for remorse and restitution for the people of Iraq and Palestine.

On the occasion of your glorious inauguration next week for the second term of your presidency, I would like to congratulate you and offer you my full and total support. As a patriotic American and a fellow Yeehaw Texas who lives a little ways from Crawford, your homestead, I would like to offer you my services and some ideas to help you resolve some of the problems facing your great nation. Although I said in the title of the letter � I found it, I found it,� my name is not Issac Newton and no, I am not Jewish and by no means I am a physicist. My name is Riad Elsolh Hamad, an Arab and a Muslim from Albasta Alfowqa in Beirut, Lebanon and the only thing that is common between Mr. Newton and I, is the fact that like him, I had to chop off a slice of my 4 inches Arab biological weapon that I was born with in a process called circumcision. The biological weapon that we the Arabs and Muslims are using to take over the world through voting booths and democracy. The blessed democracy that you are bestowing on my brothers and sisters in Iraq with to elect elderly Shia clerics. The Shia clerics who will make sure that just like Iran, the elections at the end of this month are the first and last elections that will be held after we liberated these heathens from our crony and lackey the butcher of Iraq Saddam.

As I said, my name is Riad Elsolh Hamad and my son has a completely different name than mine in pronunciation and spelling and my son and I are 32 years apart in age. Still a lot of people here in Texas do not seem to recognize the differences between the two of us in age, height and weight and they still call both of us the same name. My son and I are still called: � Camel jockeys,� � Sand niggers,� � towel face,� and � camel herders despite the fact that none of us has ever lived in a desert and the first camel I ever saw was in the San Antonio Zoo in Texas. This is despite the fact that I have lived her for 34 years and paid more income taxes than Texaco and Exxon ever did.

Please excuse me for providing you with economic advice since we �Ayrabs� are only good enough for gas stations, grocery stores and falafel stands. This is despite the fact that the average Arab in the United States earns 5000 dollars annually more than the average American and has at least two years of college education more than the average Americans. We left economic policy to our cousins, the children of Abraham, the Zionist Jews to make sure that that they allocate billions of dollars a year to support the � only democracy in the middle east, israel.� The billions that we still send to kill men, women and children and destroy homes of Palestinian Arabs regardless of the negative consequences of such policies on our interests in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Dear Mr. President,

From what I have been reading in the news there are several major policy and executive issues that you have to deal with and allow me to summarize below as follows:
1) The social security fund and its ability to provide services for the elderly beyond the year 2020.

2) The Medicare and Medicaid funds and their ability to fund increasing medical services for the growing elderly population.

3) The federal fiscal deficit that is hovering around 500 billion dollars a year and a national debt that is around 7. 6 trillion dollars today. http://www.toptips.com/debtclock.html

4) The highest ever trade deficit that is growing despite the lowest value for the dollars in more than 10 years. Simply because the Chinese laborers are able to produce goods at a lot cheaper wages than our overpaid and overfed labor force and still save 40 percent of their wages.[1]

5) The tax breaks that you promised us grateful Americans who voted you in office in order to extend the tax deductions that you bestowed on us during your first term. This is despite the fact that the government could not afford it and had to borrow money to finance such tax deductions.

6) Drop in sales tax revenue on the state and city levels thus forcing reduction of services and degradation of infrastructure such as bridges, roads and hospitals.

7) High unemployment and hidden employment due to the outsourcing of jobs to China and India.

8) The inability of the armed forces to meet its recruitment quotas and forcing the reserves to extend the tour of duty to grumbling young men and women. In addition to the cost of hiring �private contractors� to do the work that cheap black, Latino and minority troops can do.

9) A dramatic increase in Veterans Administration spending on medical benefits for retired military personnel from the Korean War, Vietnam War and Gulf War I.

10) The housing crisis that is forcing the government to spend hard earned tax money of providing shelter to undeserving low- income blacks and Latinos.

Ok, I will stop right here since I know that you do not like to hear bad news and that is why you do not watch television and you depend on Dick Cheney to give you a summary of the rosy picture of the state of our nation. My proposal is very simple and would not require legislation and between your leadership and the wisdom of our Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld it can be done with a little disinformation campaign. The disinformation campaign that your government was successful in executing to justify the war in Iraq and the so called � War on Terror.� The proposal is to draft the elderly who are over 65 years of age and know how to read and write. A General Education Diploma, GED will suffice and there will be no need for the burdensome high school diploma.

Why the draft and why the elderly? The answer if very simple and if you give me five minutes of your time, I will make you a believer. First, when you draft the elderly they will not have the energy to demonstrate or rally since hell, they need some one to hold on to in order to pee in the bathroom. The elderly cannot demonstrate since a lot of them are in wheel chairs and we can always have the police arrest them for blocking the traffic and disturbing the peace just like the New York City Police Department and the Austin Police Department did to the anti war demonstrators. Those bastards. Only if they knew of your grand plans for Iraq, the so called Middle East and the flourishing economy.

Secondly, the young men and women in America would love the idea of drafting the elderly because that will mean that they do not have to serve in the armed forces and go to Iraq. Also, this will mean increasing their chances on putting hands on the inheritance they have been waiting for and can hardly wait for their parents and grandparents to kick the bucket. I will wager you that the day you declare the draft for the elderly, you will poll rating will be the highest ever and the highest ratings of any president in the history of the United States.

Now, what will this executive order do to your plans for the economy, the war in Iraq and the possibility of your running for office in 2008. Yes in 2008 jus bear with me.

1) The social security benefits will not be necessary as the elderly will be receiving stipends as recruits. Our rubber stamp Republican Congress, just like the Saddam era parliament will pass legislation that will ensure that the elderly cannot receive draft time stipends and social security benefits at the same time. As for the savings from Medicaid, the annual spending of about 825 billion dollars will not be necessary as the elderly will be receiving the medical services of the troops in Iraq by using wooden cardboard boxes for beds. 3) The federal deficit will not be an issue any more since the annual deficit of 500 billion dollars will be covered with the savings in social security spending, cuts in Medicare and Medicaid. As a matter of fact, the total spending on these 3 large spending program is about 900 billion dollars annually which means you will actually end up with a surplus that will dwarf the surpluses of the guy before you who abused Monica Lewinsky sexually. With such a surplus you will see tens of millions of people on the street demonstrating to demand the amendment of the constitution to allow you to run for at third term. Demonstrations that will let those damn communists and hippies who demonstrated against your wise decision to liberate Iraq cry in shame. The surplus can be used to modernize our military and prepare for your great vision of liberating Iran and Syria and expanding the values of our great democracy

4) The trade deficit will not be an issue since the draft and the eventual demise of the old farts will lead to new economic realities. If I know our young people well, they will go out and spend it and buy goods and services inside the country and stimulate the local economies. Bars and restaurants will be doing booming business which will generate domestic economic activity that will rock the pants of those girliemen Democrats. The people of the world will regain confidence in our economy and start pouring their savings here which will eliminate the departure from the dollar and the reduction in the trade deficit.

5) The tax breaks will be affordable now with the budget surpluses and would not be even probably necessary as the young people of the United States will be spending their inheritance and enjoying wealth like they have never had money before. Besides, the government will receive taxes on the distributed wealth that will even increase the budget surpluses by hundreds of billions of dollars.

6) The spending by our young people of more than 6 trillion dollars in wealth and the multiplier effects of such wealth will increase sales tax revenues for the states. New sales tax receipts will allow our local governments to build more bridges and highways to enable our young people to drive their SUVs and Hummers purchased with their new acquired wealth. There will be no need for building new hospitals as the elderly will be dead and gone and medical services will not be necessary. As a matter of fact, it could be an economic boon since funeral homes will be busy, lumber companies will be busy making coffins that the unemployment rate will drop so much, Congress might have to pass your great immigration bill. The bill that will allow cheap Mexican labor to come and work in the United States so our companies do not have to pay higher minimum wage, social security or health benefits.

7) The new wealth and the way our young people will spend it surely will create the jobs that our economy will need to reduce unemployment. We might even have to open training schools in order to make sure that we have enough specialists to pierce tattoos, stick needles to draw tattoos and teach the latest combinations of mixing alcohol to our descendants. Unemployment will be a thing of the past and will require Congress to pass laws to allow new laborers to come and work in the United States by the millions. I guarantee it just like president Nixon removed the gold standard from backing the dollar and backed it with confidence in the great American people.

8) The drafting of the elderly will put to rest once and for all the problem of finding recruits for our armed forces since any man or woman who turn 65 years of age will be drafted. They will be drafted into the army when they walk in the social security office to apply for benefits or they will be collected from the addresses on the envelopes that they applied for benefits from by federal marshals. Our Congress will make sure to rubber stamp laws to impose sanctions on any nation, Canada or otherwise, that will grant refuge for any absconding rascals.

9) The Veterans Administration will be shut down since all the individuals it is serving now will be in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, France and any nation that dares oppose your wise leadership. The leadership that does not make mistakes and so foolproof that 59 million Americans voted for you in the latest landslide election.

10) The housing crises for the poor in the country will be resolved as many of them will have inherited the homes of their elderly parents and grandparents. Black and Latinos will be employed now since the booming service economy will require many more butlers, cooks, drivers and hotel maids with good tips. The young people will be traveling so much spending their newly acquired wealth that housing might be a thing of the past. Just like our moral values.

Mr. President,

I hope I did not intrude on your privacy very much since I know that you do not like long burdensome readings on policy and administration. However, I trust that your aides who were instructed not to allow the secret service look you in the eye, the day of the inauguration will brief you on this important document. This policy that can be implemented through an executive order since Congress will not be required and since you are in your second term, you will not have to worry about votes of the elderly. Even if the constitution is amended due to your great successes and you want to run again, with Diebold voting machines and Clear Channels radio stations to push your agenda to the public, who needs campaigning and polls anymore. Who needs elections to that matter. The Jewish vote will not be necessary or influential any more since most of the elderly in Florida and California are Jewish and will be happily defending our great nation in Iraq.

God bless George Bush, the great president of the United Stats. God bless his wise leadership and may he live to serve us 12 more years. Hail to the Chief.

A Letter to Pope Benedict

Pope Benedict XVI suffers from a serious case of amnesia.

I read with disgust the statement by the old man residing in Rome known to the Christian world as Pope Benedict XVI.� Apparently he had mentioned this week in a speech that Islam and Muslims have a tendency for violence and that Islam promotes � holy wars.�� It is amazing how this man forgot that for 34 days the Arabs living in Lebanon suffered for 34 days bombings by Jews using Christian made weapons from the United States to maim, kill and injure thousands of innocent civilians in Lebanon.� Pope Benedict�s amnesia is blocking his brain cells from processing the images and audio sounds coming through the ether about the tens of thousands of Palestinian Arabs, Christians as well as Muslims crying for help from the criminal actins by the Jewish state of Israel. The Christians of Palestine are living in sheer poverty at the mercy of Jews armed with guns made by Christians in Europe and the United States to deprive them of their land, water and to subdue them into submission to their racist policies.

It makes me wonder where Pope Benedict has been in the last four decades to see the bombings in Iraq, Serbia, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine against Arabs and Muslims whose only crime that they sit on the most prized peace of real estate the God created.� The Arabs and the Muslims are the victims of mass murder being committed by Christians and Jews in the name of God and the Bible, old as well as new.� Should I remind the Pope here of the mass murders committed in the name of Jesus for decades by the Crusades.� Pope Benedict should stick to doing what he and the Vatican does well.� Collect donations and accumulate wealth and protect buildings in the Holy Land that they can use to raise even more money.� This world of ours has no shame and neither does Pope Benedict.

I have lived in the United States for 34 years, 11 month, 24 days, 15 hours and 53 minutes and it never ceased to amaze me what a bunch of hypocrites live around me. All 300 millions of them. It has been like a media “ shock and awe” since last night over the alleged affair between the esteemed White House connected Rev. Ted Haggard and a male gay prostitute. Also, the allegations involve probable drug use and prostitution that the reverend vehemently denies.

There is a sitting president who admitted to drug use, prostituted this country to foreign lobbyist and has been screwing every man, woman and child in the United States, Iraq, Afghanistan, Columbia, Palestine, Lebanon and tens of other nations in the name of democracy and Judeo-Christian values” ….and no one dared raise their fingers against him. Can some one tell me please why the fuss over a sexual relationship between two adult individuals when a sitting president is depriving millions of children from health care, food, educational facilities to support his dreams left from a youthful era of drug and alcohol abuse. Could it be that the middle aged men and women in the media in the United States are jealous of Rev. Haggard because he found him a hunk that most of us overweight middle aged men envy for his stature. Give me a break and leave Rev. Haggard alone.

I just heard your comments regarding the need for “ DeNatzification” of the human beings whose ancestors lived in geographical Palestine for the last 6000 years. The human beings who gave shelter and homes to Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Mohammad and hundreds of other prophets. They did so when your ancestors back in Europe were killing, raping and robbing each other of life and property. Now that you have brought up the need for “ DeNatzifiction” in Palestine, please allow me to give you a brief on who needs to be “DeNatzified.:

1) The people who believe that they are “ God’s chosen people” and every one else including you Mr. Will is a “ Goym” whose life and property is not worthy of them

2) The people and the leadership of a people who build a wall around a whole people to deprive them of their land, trees, water and most important of all their rights to live in pride and dignity and to travel when they wish in violation of international law and the articles of the Fourth Geneva Convention on the treatment of civilians under occupation.

3) The people and the leadership of a people who kill innocent civilians with state of the art helicopters and air crafts made and paid for by the United States government and its mostly naïve an politically apathetic population in violation of international law and the articles Fourth Geneva Convention.

4) The people and the leadership of a people who supported for decades the white apartheid regime in South Africa in order to gain access to cheap oil in exchange for nuclear technology.

5) The people and the leadership of a people who find no trouble in invading the land, air space and water territories of their neighbors to steal their water and land in violation of international law.

6) The people and the leadership of a people who dominate the economic resources and the media of a super power nation to dehumanize and demonize a people ( the humans who lived in geographical Palestine for 6000 years) in order to complete their war crimes of settling in their land and stealing their resources

7) The people and the leadership of a people who support and condone the killing of hundreds of children under the age of 15 because they consider them a “ demographic threat” to their delusion of having a “ Pure Jewish state,” in the age of the internet and the global village.

8) The people and the leadership of a people who imprison children under the age of 16 and torture them under the eyes of a supreme court that issues mandates supporting torture in violation of international law and the articles of Fourth Geneva Convention.

9) The people and the leaders of a people who consume more than fifty percent of the world’s energy resources although they are less than 5 percent of the world’s population like blind hogs loose in a trough without a fence.

10) The population and the leaders of a population who elected a governor who ordered the execution of mentally retarded prisoners and then appointed him a president responsible for the killing of more than 100 000 innocent Iraqi civilians

11) The population and the leadership of a population that prides itself with democracy and equality when one in four black men were in jail, are in jail or on their way to jail because of the color of their skin

12) The population and the leadership of a population who is responsible for the killing of more than 100 000 innocent civilians in Chile after the Central Intelligence Agency coup de’ tat on September 11^th, 1973 in order to protect their copper interests.

Please not Merry Christmas to me please

Dear Friends,
Please do not send me a Hallmark Christmas cards because the town of Christmas is now a prison for the children of God he entrusted with Beitlehm. Please do not bother go to Walmart and buy me a Made in China novelty that I have no use for and will be in my 60 gallons recycling box. Please do not feel offended and No, it is not because I was born and raised a Muslim and supposed to celebrate only the Fitre and Adha Eid. Christmas was a holiday to celebrate the king of peace in the land of peace where everyone lived together in peace. The hometown of the King of Peace now is a prison that forgot the meaning of joy and awash with blood although someone’s blood was shed for it 2004 years ago.

Please tell me how can I celebrate Christmas and there are more Christians from Nazareth in Sydney, Australia than in Nazareth because “ the Chosen people” built a wall and drove millions of the children of Abraham and followers of the king of peace away from their homes. How can I celebrate Christmas where the Christians of Nazareth cannot break bread with their brethren and fellow Christian in Beitlehm. It was the Democrat William ( Bill) Clinton who tightened the sanctions against the innocent Iraqi children whose only crime is that they were born in Iraq under the regime of the murderer who was financed, armed and politically supported by the United States, France and the United Kingdom. It was Clinton’s secretary of state Madelline Albright who said that yes, the removal of Saddam Hussein, the puppet of the United States for three decades is worth the lives of half a million Iraqi children.

If there is a crime, there will be a cover up and do not count on the perpetrators being brought to justice. We will not see Rumsfeld and Gonzales tried for human rights violations due to their role in the torture of Iraqis, Yemenis and other Arabs for allegedly being members of the fictitious Alqaida. Bush and his handler and mentor Cheney will stand trial for war crimes against humanity due to the illegal war that they launched against Iraq and led to the murder of hundreds of thousands of Arabs in Iraq and Palestine. and even if indicted and convicted by the special prosecutor for fabricating evidence and lying to the world to invade Iraq and secure Israel for decades to come, a special pardon on January 19^th 2009 by W. will set them free. The trial and the judgment will take few years by the time George Bush is ready to get out of office and grant his God given power to have mercy on them and pardon them for their crimes.

I have no doubt that a lot of people today believe that the movie being played in front of them will lead to the end of the occupation of Iraq and the change in the foreign policy towards the Arabs and the Palestinians.

If you believe that the movie that is being played now in front of you will lead to the removal of these war criminals I have a proposal for you. The London bridge is up for sale and I will make a good deal for you. If you do not have the money, and you are still want to go to sleep and dream about this taking place, please do me a favor. Letter to George on Iraq

A letter to George Bush,

The Appointed president of the United States,

Dear George,

I read with much interest your statements and those of Collin Powell your messenger to the world and your voice in support the Zionist aggression against the innocent Palestinian civilians and Arabs. I am talking in particular about your comments about Iraq, the need for a regime change and the situation in the Arab world and Palestine under the Palestinian Authority when it comes to democracy and self-determination. Please allow me to point out a couple of things for you since I have read you biography and I understand that you do not “ like to read big books” so I will use my teaching skills for underachievers to help you understand a fact or two about the Arab world that your pappy told you it is called “ the Middle East.”

First, you call for a “ regime change” in Iraq, the land of the Tigers and the Euphrates that kicked many tyrants from Genghis Khan and his barbarians to the British in the middle of the twentieth century. Iraq, the cradle of civilization that gave you logarithms, architecture, astronomy, literature and anatomy when your ancestors in Europe were still debating if women had souls and hundreds of years before they tortured Galileo for promoting the idea that the earth is round. While I wholeheartedly agree with the call for a democratic Iraq and for that matter and for democratic regimes in every Arab country, you are the last one who should stick his smelly nose in the business of the Iraqi people.

Let me remind you that it was the CIA and the U.S government that forced prime minister of Iran Mussadaq in 1954, out of office and landed him in jail and killed him when it assisted the infamous Shah of Iran to return to power against the will or the heroic Iranian people. The apology of Madeline Albright forty five years later to the Iranian people did not serve anything to the Iranian people except for may be a piece of newspaper to wrap up their daily bread with.

George, it was the United States that invaded Lebanon in 1958 to impose Camille Chamoun a president on the people of Lebanon, despite the fact that the Lebanese parliament an the Lebanese people did not want to amend the constitution to allow him to run for office again. However, since he was a good CIA operative, Eisenhower saw it fit to land marines on the shores of Beirut to intimidate the Lebanese people and force them to accept Chamoun. The Marines finally left after they discovered that the Lebanese are of a different breed and threats to do not intimidate them.

Secondly, you were probably driving your pappy’s car in Houston, Texas and experimenting with cocaine when your pappy in the CIA and the war criminal Henry Kissinger pulled a coup de ta in Chile on September 11^th, 1974, (what a coincidence huh) and killed the democratically elected president Allende’ because he threatened the “ interests” of the United States and specifically those of the five copper companies that operated in the region. It is the military take over that lead to the murder of more than 100,000 innocent civilians in a soccer field in Chile so the United States can maintain its steady supplies of copper to make pennies you can use in your gum machines. According to the war criminal Henry Kissinger, the reason for the coup was that the Chilean people proved that they “ were not mature enough” to elect a president freely since they elected a socialist president by an electoral majority.

Thirdly, George you say that you want to see a regime change in Iraq because it is a menace and constitute a “ threat to world peace” with its weapons of mass destruction. Let’s talk about that a little bit and may be we can find out who is the menace and who threatens world peace with weapons of mass destruction. Since you do not like to read fat books you probably do not know that the United States was the first country in the world to use weapons of mass destruction. The United States used the H-bomb against the Japanese and then Agent Orange against the poor innocent Vietnamese civilians and killed more than two millions of them and maimed more than 200,000 children who live till today with permanent disabilities. Not to mention the hundreds of millions of dollars that poor taxpayers like me have to pay to cover the medical expenses of the Vietnam war veterans who were exposed to Agent orange that the U.S government denied its side effects till the children of the generals who went to Vietnam started to suffer and they saw first hand the consequences of the use of biological weapons.

If your history information does not go that far back let me remind you of the war that the U.S launched against Iraq (the country that you pronounce Eyerak) when the United States and the allied troops used depleted uranium in their attacks on innocent civilian Iraqis causing tens of thousands of cases of cancer, leukemia, skin diseases and other serious birth defects. The matter is not important since the victims are Iraqis but who is paying the hundreds of millions of dollars in medical bills to cover the medical expenses and early retirement of the over 100,000 U.S troops and more of the NATO troops who were exposed to the same elements.

Dear George,

I know that I am boring you and you do not like to think that far ahead and that much about trivial matters like this since you want to watch your football and baseball games and eat your pretzels but these issues effect me, my life, my tax bill and the future of my children and my grandchildren. It also effects my basic human principles as I do not believe in taking a human life for no reason even if it means that I have to pay higher prices for gas, drive an electric car or ride a bicycle to work. If you were really serious about controlling weapons of mass destruction and bringing about world peace you would sign the Land Mines Ban Treaty now. If you were really concern about the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and biological weapons you would abandon your AIPAC

(American Israeli Political Action Committee) ties at the expense of losing the next elections and force Israel to sign the international treaties on the proliferation of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. It is the only country in the region that you call the Middle East ( it is the Near East George..we are the first after Turkey that is in Europe..the Arab world for thousands of years) that owns these weapons and refuse to allow inspections although some Israeli scientists are already complaining about the lack of safety in the Israeli nuclear plants and other plants that produce weapons of mass destruction.

Yes, Israel the country that you send four billion dollars a year to finance its military machine when two out of four of our children in Texas are underfed. When one out of two students in our classrooms in Austin receive subsidized meals and we have more homeless people than the population of some nations. Yes, Texas where we spend more money on recreational drugs than we spend on our entire energy bill to the Arabian Gulf countries and more. Yes, Texas, the state that you left two years ago with the ranking of the worst air quality in the nation. Yes, we beat California and Los Angeles Mr. President. What an achievement.

Dear George,

If you want me to believe you when you say that you care about humanity and human rights values why do not you sign and urge the Congress and the Senate to ratify the International Criminal Court Treaty that you denounced today. I know that you would not and cannot in order to protect the war criminals that you have in your cabinet, Cheney ( Gulf War and Vietnam), Rumsfeld, ( Vietnam and Afghanistan), Powell, ( Iraq invasion of 1992) and yourself in the last two years. I know that you would not because it means you will have to land Sharon, Perez, Mofaz and the rest of the criminals from Tel Aviv to visit you in the federal penitentiary rather than the Lincoln room in the White House.

Beyond the ABC

I tried to raise an issue last week in the chat room but unfortunately the server was not cooperating. The concept of “literacy” has been associated in the western world with the ability to read and write the alphabet and to decipher written words and numbers on paper.

One must attempt to analyze how a child in Afghanistan or Iran can weave a carpet for six to eight month and produce a work of art utilizing higher order thinking skills in math and science. The mathematics required to produce such carpets is considered by many equivalent to the calculus equations that high school students in the United States dread and avoid. The geometrical shapes, frequencies, matrices, matching colors and color combinations requires skills in science and math that would make a computer programmer stutter.

On the other hand, a reader of the Arabic poetry will be surprised to discover that thousands of poems written by hundreds of poets were transferred from a generation down to the next generation by rote memory rather than bound paper. The Arabs for thousands of years memorized poems made of hundreds of lines without having to write them down. The poems had to rhyme and end by the same letter and no word can be used twice even in two thousand lines poems. It was considered a weakness to write poem indicating a poor memory and a lack of intelligence to memorize complex grammatical structures.

It was not till the prophet Mohammad ordered that the Quran be written to avoid changes and misinterpretations that any Arabic was written at all. Hence the Arabs consider the Quran a blessing as it encouraged people to write down their literature and preserve their history. The writing was on camel hides and palm tree leaves till paper was introduced and books were collected and bound.

On a personal level, I am the second generation in the family who had the chance to learn how to read and write in three languages, Arabic, English and Japanese. My grandfather and his brothers memorized hundreds of poems, the WHOLE of the holy Quran which is over a thousand pages and more than fifty different chapters. However, my grandfather needed my help to fill out his tax form at the end of the year or to read his phone and electric bill at the end of the month. I, like many people who admired the Western standards of literacy used to look down at my grandfather because he did not know how to read and write till I learned Japanese, computer applications and saw my son learn how to play and master five musical instruments. It became easy to comprehend how people communicate when my daughter came home for the holidays conversing fluently in Spanish, Latin and Japanese, like the Arabic that I taught her and she said that it is so much easier to understand the world around her now.

It finally occurred to me that the language is nothing but a group of symbols needed to exchange ideas with others, ask for things that you need and to execute the economic transactions that we do every day. The Japanese use Chinese characters which is like pictures and they combine these characters to make words and sounds, absence the presence of tenses and genders.

Isn’t mathematics just a language put into symbols to facilitate writing. We can use math to write a two pages economic transaction in two lines of formulae. Isn’t music a group of symbols to express feelings, emotions and to express words and sounds yet another group of symbols.

I used to also think that the alphabet was important till I saw the movie “ Space Odessy 2001” which came out in 1968 where a robot spoke in human language ( English) and expressed itself to Dave, the man character in the movie. It made wonder then why we consider the alphabet the standard for evaluating the success of the learning process undergone by a child or an individual. Many a students I have taught in the last five years can program a computer, build a web=page, complete a database or build a spread sheet faster than many adults can read one page of a newspaper. These same students can not write one whole paragraph or read one page in a book because their elementary school language arts teacher failed to motivate them. The production of audio computers will facilitate their learning and expression so the alphabet is not important anymore and they will succeed and make money more than all of the readers of this message and Bill Gates will testify to this. Bill Gates father had to bribe him to complete his homework so he can graduate from high school.

Ask a deaf person how many times sign language saved his/her life or helped them order a meal or express love and appreciation. Better yet, ask yourself how many times you felt like getting out of the car and chasing that S.O.B because he/she gave you that old sign with the middle finger and without uttering a single word.

Healty lentil soup

Hearty Lentil Soup

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups yellow split lentils washed and drained

1/3 cup wild rice (or regular short grain rice)

1/3 cup barley

12 cups water

Bring the above to a boil uncovered in a soup pot. Cover and let simmer on low heat for ½ hour.

Meanwhile prepare the following:

1 diced carrot

1 diced small potato

1 diced zucchini

1 chopped medium tomato

½ cup sliced mushrooms (one medium portabello is good)

½ cup chopped parsley

3 cloves garlic, mashed or finely minced

1 medium chopped yellow onion

1 stalk thinly sliced celery

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon salt

½ teaspoon ground cumin

1/3 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Saute onion, mushroom and celery in olive oil covered until tender. Add zucchini, parsley, carrot, potato salt and cover for 2-3 minutes on low heat. Add chopped tomato, garlic and parsley and cover for 2-3 minutes. Add all to the cooked lentils along with the cumin, cinnamon and pepper, cover and simmer for another 30 minutes. Taste and add salt if necessary.

Serve with French bread and cheese. Should be enough for 6 at least. Enjoy!

Spicy chick pea fritters:

Ingredients:

1 cup chick pea flour

1 egg beaten

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon baking powder

¼ cup chopped cilantro

2 cloves garlic mashed

¼ cup finely chopped tomato

1 minced jalapeno or Serrano pepper

1/3 cup water

mix all ingredients until smooth. If more water is needed add one tablespoon at a time. The batter should be thick (waffle mix consistency or thicker). Heat oil in deep frying pan. Drop tablespoonfuls of batter in hot oil. Turn with a fork to brown on other side. When evenly golden brown, remove from oil and drain excess oil on paper towels. Serve hot. Makes 8 to 12 fritters.

P.S. You can add chopped finely cauliflower after you boil them for five minutes and drain the water from them or finely chopped eggplants and mix them with the batch mentioned above.

On Palestinian choices

To the Editor,
The article titled “ Palestinian Choices” brought tears to my eyes from the joy that Palestinians finally have choices and the ability to live on their own. However, the facts that exist on the ground in Palestine give Palestinians the following choices only:

1) To get shot with an M16 rifle or missile from an Apache helicopter paid for with United States taxpayers’ money.

2) To have their homes destroyed with an American built CAT 9 or a missile from an F16 fighter jet supplied from surplus of the United States airforce.

3) To have 20 foot high brick wall to prevent them from sending their children to school in the morning or to tend to their animals and olive trees.

4) To have their children, brothers, sisters, husbands and wives killed by the more than 400 000 illegal settlers on land stolen from them in violation of international law and the Fourth Geneva Convetion.

5) To stay in jail anywhere from 6 months to 20 years based on “ administrative detentions without having committed any crime what so wever.

6) To be tortured with electric wiring or hot/cold water showers naked at night in front of other prisoners.

7) Whether to desecrate their mosques or the Church of Nativity at their holidays

I can go on for days and that still would not wake up the your conscience or that of the Congress of the United States and get you to finally accept the human rights of the Palestinian people. Have some professional integrity and address the issue of the terror imposed on the people of Palestine. Have some sense of human empathy, visit Palestine and see for yourself the pain of 3 million Palestinians. Look around you and feel the pain of more than 8 million Palestinian refugees waiting to go back to their homes and crying : Until When.”

Palestinian choices

WHETHER OR NOT the Islamist movement Hamas wins a majority in tomorrow's election for the Palestinian Legislative Council, the result is almost certain to severely weaken the Fatah party, founded by Yasser Arafat. At a time when polls indicate that over 60 percent of Palestinians and Israelis alike favor a two-state solution to their conflict, the ascension of Hamas will probably make it harder to bring the parties together to negotiate a historic peace agreement.

Worrisome as the expected success of Hamas may be, it would be defeatist for Israel or the Bush administration to respond by passively accepting an indefinite delay of the negotiations that alone may lead to the two-state solution both peoples want and need.

For the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, who has been admirably consistent in renouncing violence, the growing popularity of Hamas amounts to a negative verdict on his effectiveness. The decline of Fatah underlines his failure to reform the Fatah institutions, its corrupt practices, and the personnel policies he inherited from Arafat.

If Palestinian voters tomorrow confer on Hamas the role of a powerful opposition party or, in a worst-case scenario, of a majority party, they will do so not because of Hamas's stance on the conflict with Israel but as a repudiation of Fatah's corruption, incompetence, and incoherence. The possibility for just this sort of repudiation is one of the most basic virtues of democratic elections. Citizens of authoritarian regimes in other parts of the Arab world -- in Syria, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia -- can only look on enviously as Palestinian voters take the opportunity to curtail the power of the kleptocrats ruling over them.

Just as Abbas missed his opportunity to rebuild political institutions Arafat let wither, and just as he failed to bestow law and order as well as economic development on the West Bank and Gaza, Israel fumbled its chance to make gestures, in the 14 months since Arafat's death, to persuade Palestinians that Abbas's peaceful path was bringing them tangible benefits. The Israeli reasoning was that Abbas, whatever his good intentions, would not be able to dismantle the armed groups, and so it would be pointless for Israel to take security risks by reducing checkpoints, closures, and settlement expansion. The result was that Abbas's approach seemed to bring no improvement in Palestinians' daily life, and therefore many Palestinians who do not share Hamas's rejection of a two-state solution will vote for the Islamists as a way of casting out the Fatah devil they know all too well.

The need for a negotiated two-state solution remains the same as ever, but a Palestinian exercise in democracy is about to make the path to that peace more tortuous than ever.
